VISU-member Brenda Bikoko will participate in the 8th Biennial Afroeuropeans Network Conference.
Abstract of the contribution
The problem with colonial archival photos is that we tend to forget that we are looking at people with lives from a not so distant past. The archive is no longer only a documentation center. Artist residencies working with the colonial are a great example of this. Therefore, archives need to be accessible. In our reflection on artistic interventions in colonial archives, we will attempt to forge a new space for colonial photographs in a contemporary art context. A space that is no longer bound exclusively to geography but also as an event and process. A tool for dialogue where perception and reception is made possible beyond the boundaries and interests that space can inhabit.
How can we open and stimulate fair re-use of colonial archives? How can different contemporary artistic approaches help to redifine the traditional colonial classifications and space in the archive and in photographs?
Place
The conference takes place from 22 September until 24 September, 2022, at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel – Humanities, Sciences & Engineering Campus. Pleinlaan 2, Brussel, 1050.
