Lecture given by Prof. Christophe Loir (Université libre de Bruxelles - Royal Commission for Monuments and Sites) and Dr. Tom Packet (Vrije Universiteit Brussel - Hortamuseum).
The evolution of mobility during the interwar period is an essential factor in understanding Art Deco. From garages to train stations, via pedestrian arcades, from the materiality of the streets to the location of new neighborhoods, architecture and urban planning reflect the rise of the automobile, the expansion of the railway network, and the desire to provide spaces reserved for pedestrians. In addition to a general overview, we will focus more specifically on the work of Victor Horta through the lens of mobility.
