The hyperdiverse city of Brussels has given rise to a vibrant artistic milieu that mirrors the cultural richness of its inhabitants. Among the diverse artistic practices flourishing in the city, a growing number of artists, theater makers and cultural workers develop methodologies based on participation and communal engagement. Departing from the prevailing paradigm of a single artist and individual authorship, they engage in collaborative projects involving local communities or recently arrived newcomers in the city. In doing so, they develop artistic practices of hospitality.
In this seminar, three such projects will take center stage, opening a space for dialogue and exchange. The program consists of the following contributions:
Mohamed Ouachen, La Gramaturgie. Une autre prespective sur les pratiques artistiques issues de l'immigration marocaine en Belgique et sa réception. (in French, with English translation)
Esther Severi and Einat Tuchman, BILDY project for empowerment of local values and talents through art
Marieke Slovin Lewis, Creating Space for Hearing Migrant Voices through Participatory Songwriting
This event is organized jointly by Katarzyna Ruchel-Stockmans (VUB) and Karel Vanhaesebrouck (ULB) and has as its goal to bring together the students and researchers of the two universities in a debate on art, participation and hospitality in the urban context of Brussels.
